For Recruitment

Do I need to go to all the sororities?

Yes! The goal of formal recruitment is for women to to learn as much as possible about Miami's greek community and each individual chapter. Going to all the chapters' events allows you to explore your options and make the best decision on what chapter to join. If you do miss a party that you've been invited to, you may be released from recruitment.

If I participate in recruitment am I obligated to join a sorority?

No. The purpose of formal recruitment is to allow all women who are interested in joining a sorority to learn more about the chapters and to help find their perfect fit. No one is obligated to join a sorority and you may withdraw from recruitment at any time.

Does everyone participating in recruitment receive a bid?

If you go through the entire recruitment process and rank all chapters you visited for preference round, you are guaranteed a bid. However, it may not be a bid from your first choice chapter.  There is never a 100% chance that any PNM will be placed in the chapter they ranked first in their preference.

On the other hand, if you do NOT rank all the chapters you visited during preference round or you intentionally preference a single chapter, there is no guarantee that you will be offered a bid.

I'm having a hard time deciding what sororities to remove form my list at the end of each round. Is this normal?

Yes! Recruitment can be hard at some times because you have to make the difficult decision after each round regarding your preferences. No worries because almost everyone feels this way. Just rememberthat you want to find a chapter that can be your home away from home and whose values fit yours. Don't worry about what your friends are doing, This is all about you!

What if I don't fit the stereotype of a typical “sorority girl?”
There are very few women in Greek life that actually fit that stereotypical mold. Sorority girls all not all blowing glitter, wearing matching t-shirts, and walking to a hit song for a recruitment video.  We’re all friends, get involved, and have fun, but there is no stereotypical sorority girl here.  Greek women at Miami consistently have higher GPAs than the all women’s average, while participating in more activities in and outside of Greek life. With 18 sororities at Miami, there is a place for every woman to fit in!

What is a legacy?

A legacy is typically defined as the sister, daughter, or granddaughter of a woman already initiated into a National Panhellenic Conference sorority. Thus, if your mother, sister, or grandmother is a member of any of our chapters, you are considered a legacy to that organization. It’s important to include this information when you register for recruitment, as most sororities give some special consideration to legacies. Some sororities also recognize other relationships (such as nieces, stepdaughters, etc.) as being legacies, and many request a special legacy introduction form be mailed to the chapter prior to recruitment. Check with the national organization in question for more information about their specific legacy policy.

What is a bid? What is Bid Day?
A bid is a formal invitation to join a sorority.  Bid Day is the last day of Formal Recruitment when women pick up their bids and find out which sorority has offered them an invitation for membership.  Bid Day takes place after the last round of recruitment, Preference Night.  This is an extremely exciting time as it is the first time that your New Member class will come together.

I’m interested in Going Greek, but I still do not know if it is for me...

There are many women in the Miami Greek community that came to college unsure if Greek Life was for them as well.  Since Formal Recruitment is in the Spring at Miami, many freshman have the opportunity to explore pre-recruitment events to see if they would like to join!  Many of these women now credit their favorite times at Miami to their Greek experience.

Please visit a Go Greek 101 Information Session ( dates  listed under our Calendar), or email our VP of Recruitment, Moriah Flynn with additional questions!

Are there Sorority Houses at Miami University?

There are no sorority houses in Oxford, Ohio.  Sorority women have the opportunity to live in a Sorority Corridor (floor of a dorm) in Sorority Quad during their Sophomore year.  This quad is currently under renovation, so a number of chapters are living in other locations until renovations are completed.
